Salt Lake City, June 2025 – It’s been nearly 20 years since Salt Lake City has had a direct route to Asia and as of June 12th, Delta Air Lines’ new direct service between Salt Lake City (SLC) and Seoul–Incheon (ICN) renews Utah’s global connectivity—and the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) is proud to support the effort.
With backing from Salt Lake City International Airport and the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity, the new flight opens a direct link between Utah and the Asia-Pacific region—bringing economic, strategic, and logistical benefits for Utah businesses.
UIPA’s role in the effort includes marketing support and coordination to help Utah companies understand and leverage this new route for both passenger and cargo opportunities.
A Strategic Boost for Utah’s Economy
For many Utah Import & exporters, Asia is a top trade partner—but until now, the Utah manufacturer market has had to rely on out of state solutions to reach Asia. . The launch of this route changes that dynamic.
“This is a game-changer for Utah’s trade and logistics sectors,” said Sebastian Abril, UIPA’s Director of Air Freight Strategy. “A direct connection to South Korea shortens transit times, strengthens supply chains, and signals to global partners that Utah is serious about doing business.”
What This Means for Utah
- Faster market access for high-value goods, including life sciences, aerospace components, electronics, and perishables.
- Improved air cargo capacity, with wide-body aircraft supporting pallet heights of up to 62 inches, a critical feature for most manufacturers looking to maximise bulk moves.
- Stronger regional competitiveness as Utah businesses look to scale up imports & exports..
UIPA’s support includes a $300,000 marketing commitment to help raise awareness among shippers, logistics firms, and industry partners about the new cargo potential of the route.
Part of a Bigger Picture
The new SLC–ICN flight aligns with UIPA’s broader strategy to expand freight options in and out of Utah, support intermodal logistics, and ease dependence on coastal chokepoints. It complements ongoing rail investments and air cargo infrastructure planning—reinforcing Utah’s emergence as a key logistics hub for the Mountain West.
