Utah Energy Spotlight: Highlighting innovative energy projects across the Beehive State

EVgo and Kroger Expand Fast Charging Partnership, Starting in Salt Lake City

In February, the UIPA Clean Ports team braved a snowstorm to celebrate a significant milestone for electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure: the opening of EVgo’s newest 12-stall, 350kW fast charging station at Smith’s (845 E 4500 S) in Salt Lake City. This site marks the first operational location in the expanded collaboration between EVgo and the Kroger Family of Stores, designed to integrate high-power charging into the daily routines of Americans.

Building on a relationship that began in 2022, EVgo is planning to build at least 150 fast charging stalls a year through 2035 at Kroger locations across the U.S. EVgo has the country’s third-largest and second-fastest growing DC fast charging network in the U.S., with more than 1,200 fast charging locations across 47 states – including 8 locations here in Utah.

Future locations are targeted for Arizona, California, Florida, and beyond. These stations feature chargers that can deliver a full charge in as little as 15 minutes—an ideal fit for grocery locations, where shoppers tend to spend less than an hour. In the press release announcing the expanded collaboration, EVgo CEO Badar Khan, said “Adding fast charging to Kroger locations will provide the growing number of EV drivers an essential amenity—the convenience of charging where they shop while empowering drivers with the freedom to choose electric.”

February’s ribbon-cutting event featured esteemed speakers including Tina Murray, Division Head of Communications and Public Affairs for Smith’s and Jenney Rees, Deputy State Director for U.S. Senator John Curtis. As UIPA’s Clean Ports team continues to support local electrification, we are thrilled to see Salt Lake City lead the way in making fast and convenient charging more accessible to all. Congratulations to everyone involved in meeting this exciting milestone!
