Utah Inland Port Authority Proposes Skyline Corridor Project Area to Boost Central Utah’s Economy

SALT LAKE CITY – On September 4, the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) proposed the Skyline Corridor Project Area, an initiative designed to drive economic development across Sanpete, Sevier, and Wayne counties. The proposal, which will be presented to the UIPA board on October 7 for final review and adoption, seeks to revitalize these communities through strategic infrastructure investments and economic diversification.

Jenna Draper, UIPA’s associate vice president of regional project area development for Central and Eastern Utah, detailed the vision for the Skyline Corridor at today’s announcement. The project aligns with UIPA’s mission to generate long-term economic benefits statewide. The Skyline Corridor Project Area is expected to leverage Central Utah’s key transportation routes, including U.S. 89, Interstate 70, and Utah State Route 24, to support various industries.

The project encompasses multiple distinct zones within the region, each tailored to meet the specific needs of the participating communities. These zones will operate independently while contributing to the overarching goals of the Skyline Corridor. The development strategy emphasizes infrastructure enhancement, targeted industry attraction, and sustainable growth.

Key elements of the proposal include:

  • Economic Revitalization: The Skyline Corridor aims to attract high-quality jobs and stimulate economic activity in Central Utah, a region historically reliant on agriculture, mining, and tourism. The project encourages growth in sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, renewable energy, and technology.
  • Infrastructure Utilization: The proposal seeks to optimize existing transportation corridors, creating a robust logistical framework to support regional economic expansion. UIPA is also exploring partnerships to develop a transload facility in the nearby Castle Country Project Area, further enhancing regional rail access.
  • Environmental Considerations: UIPA is committed to ensuring that all development within the Skyline Corridor adheres to stringent environmental standards. The project includes thorough environmental reviews to protect the region’s natural resources, including critical habitats and water bodies.

Local government bodies have shown strong support for the project, with resolutions passed by the city councils of Ephraim, Manti, Gunnison, Salina, Richfield, and the Wayne County Commission. These endorsements reflect a shared commitment to regional development and economic resilience.

“The Skyline Corridor Project Area represents a significant opportunity for Central Utah,” Draper said. “This initiative is poised to drive economic growth while positioning our communities to meet future challenges.”

UIPA encourages public review of the Skyline Corridor Project details on its website and invites community input as part of the development process. The project’s success will depend on collaboration with the communities it is designed to benefit.
