Expanding Air Cargo Opportunities: UIPA, SLC and Delta Air Lines Partner on SLC–Incheon Flight

Sarah Gonzalez, Director of State and Local Government Affairs with Delta Air Lines, Inc, and Sebastian Abril, Director of Air Freight Strategy & Development with UIPA, present the Incheon flight marketing incentive opportunity to the UIPA Board on March 24, 2025.

The Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLCIA)  are taking a strategic step to enhance international trade and cargo movement by partnering with Delta Air Lines to promote the air cargo capabilities of the Salt Lake City (SLC) to Incheon (ICN) flight. As part of this initiative, UIPA is allocating $300,000 in incentives to market and grow air cargo volume on this key route.

“Expanding air cargo opportunities is critical to Utah’s economic growth, and the SLC–Incheon route represents a major step in strengthening our global trade connections,” said Sebastian Abril, Director of Air Freight Strategy & Development with UIPA. “By working with Delta to market this flight’s cargo potential, we’re creating new pathways for businesses to move goods efficiently between Utah and South Korea, reinforcing our state’s role as a key logistics hub.”

Strengthening Trade Ties with South Korea

South Korea is an important economic partner for Utah, with growing opportunities in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, and life sciences. The direct flight between Salt Lake City and Incheon International Airport provides a critical link for businesses looking for efficient, reliable air freight solutions into Asia Pacific (ASPAC). By promoting this route, UIPA and SLCIA  aim to position Utah as a stronger player in global logistics while supporting industries that rely on international shipping yet are impacted by the increasing congestion of the coastal ports.

“Salt Lake City International Airport plays a vital role in supporting economic growth through air cargo, and the SLC–Incheon flight opens new doors for Utah businesses looking to expand in international markets,” said Bill Wyatt, Executive Director of Salt Lake City Department of Airports. “With UIPA’s commitment to growing air freight on this route, we see an opportunity to further solidify SLC as a competitive logistics hub connecting the Mountain West to the world.”

Strategic Marketing for Cargo Growth

UIPA, SLCIA and Delta will launch a targeted marketing campaign to drive cargo growth on the SLC–Incheon route. Efforts will focus on raising awareness among freight forwarders, logistics providers, and manufacturers through digital and print promotions, social media outreach, educational initiatives, and industry partnerships. By highlighting the route’s efficiency and benefits, the campaign aims to strengthen trade connections and increase cargo volume between Utah and South Korea.

“Delta is committed to connecting businesses with global markets, and our partnership with UIPA underscores the importance of Salt Lake City as a growing air cargo gateway,” said Sarah Gonzales, Director of State and Local Government Affairs with Delta Air Lines, Inc. “Through this initiative, we look forward to increasing freight capacity on the SLC–Incheon route and providing reliable, efficient shipping solutions for our customers.”

Ensuring Impact and Accountability

The agreement includes a structured reporting requirement. Delta Air Lines will provide a final report summarizing flight performance, marketing outcomes, and financial transparency to ensure all funds directly support cargo development.

By investing in strategic air cargo development, UIPA and SLCIA are not only strengthening Utah’s logistics network but also fostering new opportunities for global trade. The SLC–Incheon route is poised to become a vital link for businesses seeking faster, more efficient international shipping solutions.
